First off, what does it mean to 'Screen Cast'?

Screencasting is a valuable tool when you are presenting "How To" do things in an online environment.

Here are a few options that I am familiar with:

1. One Note 2016 -This One is Often Forgotten... but you can do Video and Audio recordings of yourself using One Note. Which is installed on everyone's computers.
NOTE: ... you aren't recording your screen... but you can record yourself...talking and explaining. Either through Video... or Just Audio.

-You can take screen clippings as well.

Some of the things you can do in One Note.

2. Screencastify - Screencastify is a Google Extension. It will work in Google Chrome only.
It is free, and is well liked, and I know several schools have staff who use this. There is a limit to the size of the videos. Find Screentastify here: https://www.screencastify.com/

3. Screencast-O-Matic is a "web based" screencaster...NOTHING to install! AND, it is also free. It runs in your web browser. As a free tool, this also has a time limit. https://screencast-o-matic.com/

4. Loom - I just heard of this one... it was going around on the Tech Director Listserv. Seems like people are really liking Loom. https://www.loom.com/

There is a free version, which has shorter videos, and a Professional version.

Also, during the Covid-19 Outbreak, they are making Loom Professional free for Educators.
For more information Go HERE

Lastly... here is a link to an article I found the other day, that has some other options on there. Screencast-O-Matic is one of the options on there. Some of them are web based, some of them are programs that need to be installed. But this article is a good resource for you to look at.
https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-screen-recorder

Reminder... if you NEED something installed... you will likely need to have me do this for you. I can walk you through this...or I can do this for you on Monday when we get together.

I think the main thing to remember here, is that "everyone will have different needs and ideas"... what will work for one class, may NOT work for another. So be creative, and think of different things you can try. Don't think you are WRONG, if you are doing something different from someone else.

(who knows?)

I thought I would share a quick post on Using Google Classroom. I know that we have a few staff members who already use Google Classroom (Mr. Mitchell is one that immediately comes to mind.

All Elkton Teaching Staff have a Google Account that comes with your K12 account that is provided to you from the K12 Data Center. That Google Account gives you the opportunity to create and use a Google Classroom.

I have been using Google Classroom with my Computer Applications class for the last several years. In fact, we use it to do ALL of our assignments. I like it for a number of reasons, including:

It organizes all your assignments...they are right there. There is no "losing" one, or searching through folders to find an assignment. The Google Classroom automatically puts the submissions from each into a separate Google Drive folder. You can access them directly from the Classroom itself...or you can go into your Google Classroom folders on Google Drive.

It is accessible online from anywhere. You don't need to be at school to Grade assignments, you can do it from anywhere with an internet connection. THIS is also a positive for the students, as they can turn in assignments from anywhere, at any time.

YOU can include all kinds of materials to your students via Google Classroom, including papers, notes, worksheets, etc.

You can include links to anything you would want the student to do. You can even do your tests on Google Classroom using "Google Forms".

Although there isn't a "video" portion to record yourself... you can include links to videos, including Youtube, but you can also make a brief video of yourself using your computer webcam, and simply upload it to google drive, where you can include a link to it in a post.

Audio - you can do similar with Audio files. Record yourself, either on your computer, or even on your phone, if you like... then upload the file into a Google Drive folder and share it...and anyone with the link can listen to it.

My last 4 Semesters of classes on Google Classroom

Over the past few years, I have had the students do all types of assignments and upload them to the Google Classroom... some of them have been online work, where they have to post the link. Some of them have been work on Microsoft Office Products where they upload the actual file that they created, and some of them have been Google Products that they created right in the Google Classroom (there is an option that says 'create' when they look at the assignment)
-I even have the students upload Microsoft Publisher files into Google Classroom... there is no Google equivalent for 'Publisher' on the web, but the files are there, and I can access them by downloading them on my computer and opening them in Publisher. (they appear like BLANK files in Google Drive)

A Google Classroom is a very simple and effective way to get information and assignments to students, AND gives them the opportunity to submit things back to you.
-You DO need to have an internet connection to access Google Classroom.

If you have further questions regarding Google Classroom, or would like help setting one up, please let me know.
I Love Podcasts.

I listen to them all the time. I have a podcast app on my phone (Podcast Addict), and I have "subscriptions" to about 20 different shows. Most of them are weekly, some of them only run for 10 episode "seasons" and then they disappear for a year.

But they are all FREE. I don't pay a dime, and I have hours and hours of free entertainment and education that I download straight to my phone, and push straight to my ears.

Many of the podcasts I listen to are for entertainment (I really enjoy Sports and True Crime Stories), so I listen to those a lot, but there are also some that are very educational (if not entirely FOR Education).

So, I thought I would share a blog post with some ideas for Podcasts that would/could be helpful or beneficial for teachers. Because, if I was just starting out in the world of podcasts, and didn't know what I was doing... It would definitely be overwhelming.

There are so many to choose from, where to start?

I just went to "PodcastOne.com" and clicked on podcasts, and took this screen shot.

There are currently 294 podcasts listed on Podcast One.

And just for clarification... Podcast One, is perhaps the largest Podcast network, but it's not the ONLY one. There are several. So How Many Podcasts Are There? Thousands. Thousands and Thousands.

If you would like to do your own investigating, here is a list of The 51 Best Education Podcasts. I cannot verify the list, but there are some good ones on there, for sure.

You can also do some searches by subject matter. Here are a few lists I found:

Education World: Podcasts for Science

Education World: Podcasts for English/Language Arts

18 Best Podcasts for Elementary, Middle, and High School

HERE are some suggestions of some podcasts that I am familiar with.

Cross-Curriculum - These Podcasts really cover just about any subject matter, it just depends on the week. It could be history, it could be science, it could deal with the Arts, it just depends on the subject...but some excellent shows. I'm just going to copy and paste the descriptions from the show's webpage.

Radiolab - <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , "liberation sans" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.6667px;">Radiolab is a show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , "liberation sans" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.6667px;">This American Life - There's a theme to each episode of <span style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">This American Life<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">, and a variety of stories on that theme. Most of the stories are journalism, with an occasional comedy routine or essay. There's lots more to the show, but it's sort of hard to describe.

Social Studies has a lot of really good ones.
Revisionist History - really interesting and well done by Malcolm Gladwell.
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - this is a phenomenal podcast, but only for true History junkies. And the episodes are REALLY LONG.
Stuff You Missed in History Class
Freakonomics Radio - interesting and fun show on economics.

Science
Science Vs - This one is one of my personal favorites. Just great stuff.
How Stuff Works
Star Talk Radio - hosted by Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Language Arts? - I am putting down here a few "fictional podcasts", that use story telling.
-You can think of these as like Old Time Radio Programs.
Welcome to Nightvale - Very well done, and really creative.
The Black Tapes - Kind of like an "X-files" sort of mystery and supernatural podcast.
Homecoming -self described as a "Psychological Thriller"
The Truth -describes itself as "movies for your ears".

Podcasts for Educators - here is a list of podcasts that are "Education based" by and for Educators.

And just for fun, because I love them, here is a list of some excellent "True Crime" Podcasts.
(these are just really good stories, that I have listened to. Not sure how they could be used in an educational setting at all... I just like them. More for personal enjoyment.)

Serial - Season One, which focused on the murder of a High School girl in 1999, is amazing.
In The Dark - this podcast focused on the Jacob Wetterling case.
Phoebe's Fall - An investigative podcast in the death of a young Australian woman.
Up and Vanished - a podcast that explores the unexplained disappearance of Tara Grinstead, a young teacher in a small town in Georgia.

There are podcasts for everything you can think of: Gardening, Religion, Politics, Music, Health/Fitness, you name it...

There is just SO MUCH free content out there that can be used either as a resource, or as something that can be assigned... (like, listen to this podcast and write a reaction paper?) or things of that nature.

A quick warning. As podcasts are simply audio files that are uploaded to the internet, they are NOT monitored by the FCC. This will require you to listen to it, and verify that they are appropriate for use in the classroom. I just don't want someone to attempt to play a podcast, and then have inappropriate language or something like that to pop up, out of the blue. (Some of them are "radio friendly" some are not)coacharminghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407896015412951879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938054770488444541.post-74728505785574852652017-09-05T10:17:00.000-05:002017-09-05T10:17:06.871-05:00Tuesday Technology Tips - Download Youtube videos

Greetings, I hope everyone had a great labor day weekend vacation.

Today's "Tuesday Technology Tips" is a helpful one, if you are a person who likes to show classroom videos from YouTube to your class!

One problem that happens occasionally, is that perhaps wireless signal is not working well, or perhaps the network is slow because of high traffic within the building.

However, you can eliminate all the "need" and/or "worry" about showing YouTube videos, by downloading them to your computer.

There are several free websites that can help you do this, and they all work basically the same.

Follow these steps:
1. Go to the YouTube video you want to show and COPY the URL (Web address) of the video.

2. Go to your "preferred" YouTube download site. (there are several)

https://www.onlinevideoconverter.com/

http://keepvid.com/sites/download-youtube-video.html

(These are just a few)

3. PASTE the YouTube address in the appropriate Box on the site

4. Click on the "command" or "enter" or the button that is next to the Text-box... the site will then convert the YouTube video to a downloadable file.

5. If you want to WATCH it as a video, you will want to select "MP4" format, and click "Download".

6. The file will download to your "download" folder...if you want to move somewhere else, you may do so, I would suggest placing them in your "Videos" folder, but that's me. If you are just going to show it once, and then delete the file when you are done showing it... go ahead and place it on your desktop.

7. This will allow you to show the video in Windows Media Player or the Movies and TV App (if you have Windows 10). Your video will run locally on your computer, and you won't have to rely on internet connection. (This will also save on bandwidth while school is in session for other users)

There you go, that is all the steps you need.

Have a great Homecoming Week everyone!
Greetings, and I hope the new school is finding everyone well.

I am attempting to revive my "weekly" blog post, where I share some helpful technology tips and things of that nature.

Up first, a relatively simple thing to do: Shut down your computer!

Is it actually necessary? The answer is... sometimes?
https://www.howtogeek.com/131595/is-there-any-reason-to-actually-shut-down-your-computer/

-without reading this, just know that the more programs, and files and things you open... it starts different processes within the computer, and many of them keep running, even after you close the program.

So, it's just good practice to shut your computer down at the end of the work day. Your computer will start "fresh" each day.

It is NOT necessary to shut it down and restart it several times a day.
-Start it at the start of the day, shut it down at the end of the day.

A few other reasons to "shut down" your computers.

1. Our computers our connected to the Internet by the "Fortigate" software firewall installed by the state. If you are logged in overnight, there is a chance that the Fortigate itself restarted overnight, and it will no longer see you as an authenticated user. It will recognize "old" users as "guests" and many times... that means you will be blocked from websites that are normally open to teaching staff.

*This is why, most of the time, when teachers tell me "YouTube is blocked" or something like that, my first suggestion is always "restart your computer". When you do that... you log in to the network fresh again, and your credentials are restored. (This works approximately 92% of the time).

2. Windows Updates. Microsoft releases updates to it's windows machines periodically (normally on Tuesday's... it's sometimes called "Patch Tuesday"). These updates are generally good for your computer, resolve problems that were unforeseen when the software was issued, and often times contain security patches, that keep your computer safe.
-Many times, your computer will need to "restart" to install and configure the updates.
*I know they can be long (depending on the size of the update), and kind of a pain to wait for, but shutting down your computer at the end of the day, so computers can complete updates is good for the health of your computer.

So, to sum up... it's good to "shut down" every day, at the end of the day!
-It helps your computer to run faster (eliminates unnecessary processes)
-It helps your network connection (by authenticating to the server each day)
-It helps with the installation of updates.

Take some time to relax!

Here's hoping that everyone has a great Summer Break, and is able to enjoy some time with family, and participate in some great warm weather opportunities.

I will be in and out of the school during June and July.
I do have DDN-IT training in Madison June 5-8, so I will definitely not be in the office on those days.
I will also be coaching Basketball with Mr. Erickson at a few team camps, as well as working at our "Youth BB Skills Camp".
And of course, I will be running Marcus and Miles to a few basketball camps, as well.

However, if you need me to help you with something and you aren't sure when I'm in the office, feel free to e-mail or call.

The best way to contact me in the Summer is through e-mail: mark.harming@k12.sd.us, however if I am out of the office on that day, you can contact me on my Cell 605-651-1447.

Have a safe and fun Summer, and come back re-charged for 2017-2018!coacharminghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407896015412951879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938054770488444541.post-68315982624633016412017-05-04T11:48:00.001-05:002017-05-04T11:48:52.886-05:00Privacy and Phones - podcastOne of my very favorite podcasts in the world is called Reply All.

It is ostensibly, a podcast "about the internet", but they get into many, many different subjects.

Anyway, for the sake of investigation... one of the two co-hosts allowed the other to put "spyware" on a android phone, and then use that phone... to see what the other person could see, and what could they access.

It was really interesting, and worth your while to listen to, particularly if you are interested in security, and knowing what type of data is at risk when using an "infected" device.

Here is a LINK to the show page on the Gimlet website.
-You can listen to it directly on the page, or you can download it from there, as well.

Also, typically Reply All posts their shows on Soundcloud, but this episode hadn't posted when I wrote this blog post.
One of the difficulties with working with Technology in the classroom, is trying to stay current. There are always new apps, new websites, and new resources available. It always seems as soon as you learn how to use something, it quickly becomes outdated, and there is something "new". It can be difficult to "keep up" with new programs and ideas.

A few years ago, at TIE conference, I was able to see Richard Byrne speak.

He is a former teacher and a leader in the field of incorporating technology use into the classroom.

His Blog: Free Technology for Teachers is a great resource for teachers of all grade levels.

There is a great deal of information on his blog, including apps for ipads, chromebooks, etc...

He updates the blog frequently, so I follow him on Twitter, as he posts on there whenever the blog is updated.

Hope this is a resource that can utilize to help you.

You have some notes to give, but you just don't want to use "PowerPoint" again.

OR, perhaps you have an assignment where you want the students to present some information, but you would like to try something new?

Well, for the sake of variety, perhaps you could use a different presentation application?

There are a number of online resources, out there. Some of them incorporate video, some of them are for "booklets" or "magazines", some of them are for animation or comic strips.

The point is, there is a lot of different resources available, and by "mixing up" the variety of your presentations and/or assignments you can keep things a bit more fresh.

I am going to post a list of them below.

Google Slides "Google Drive" version of PowerPoint.

Prezi - Interactive slide show

Glogster - Poster Creator

Go Animate - online animation resource

Info.gram - creates graphics and Charts

Issuu - creates online documents "magazines"

Knovio - online presentations, with audio or video embedded?

Metta.io - online presentations with Video... compatible with Google Drive

SlideRocket - online presentations

StoryJumper - create online Story Books

SimpleBooklet - create online "Booklets"

Storybird - create, read, and print Art inspired stories.

StripCreator create and share comic strips

ToonDo - create your own comic strips and comic books

VoiceThread - create and share images with images, audio, and video

Zentation - Presentation tool that brings together slides and video.

Note: This is certainly not an "all-inclusive" list. There are always new websites, and new ideas being implemented. This is a just a list I had on hand.

ALSO: Most of the sites are free, or have a free option. It is possible that some of them are NOT free and that there is a charge for their service.

I haven't used them all, but I have had students who have used many of the sites discussed here for various products, and I have been very pleased when getting the results.

Technology ChangesI saw this video about a year or so ago, and I thought it was quite good.

Enjoy "Kids React to Walkman"

When I was in HS (and early in college!) having a Walkman meant that you were cutting edge!
(Portable CD players did not become "common" until I was in college a few years)

It's funny to watch these kids look at this technology as something... well other than that.

A good reminder that while time is passing, the tools and devices we use are changing as well. Don't be afraid to embrace something new!coacharminghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407896015412951879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938054770488444541.post-48744664503440437012017-03-23T10:12:00.000-05:002017-03-23T10:12:07.049-05:00Website to check for account hacksI heard about this website yesterday while listening to a podcast.

https://haveibeenpwned.com/

It is a site that keeps track of some "major" data breaches from some major companies, and it will tell you if your username or e-mail address has been hacked.

How to use the site:

It's a pretty simple site, to check if any of your accounts have been hacked.
(some websites give you a "username" some have you use an "e-mail address" as your username)

You just put your username in the box and click the button.

And then you get your results

If you are like me, you have a lot of different usernames and e-mail accounts that you have used throughout the years.

So, it is definitely a good idea to search for all your different usernames and e-mails.

What to do if they find a breach?

What this means is that your account information for that specific site (it lists all the sites that information was taken from) has been taken. You should go to that account and change your password ASAP.

Where this could become a BIG PROBLEM is if you are a person who uses the same password for the majority of your accounts. The hackers would now have your password for all the possible sites that you use that particular username/e-mail address with.

A word of caution

This website does not have a comprehensive listing of all the possible data breaches. You could certainly get the "Good news - no pwnage found!" message, and some of your accounts could still have had a data breach. It is just a tool to see that if some of the major/well known data breaches have reached any of your accounts.

Best Practices

Use different passwords and credentials for every online account you have. (That way if there is a data breach it will only affect that one account.)

The most effective passwords are random numbers, letters and symbols.

Do NOT use your kids names

Do NOT use your last name or Maiden name.

Do NOT use anything that can be tracked to you, like your phone number, city, school attended, workplace, etc, etc...

EXAMPLE: g8xSy2Ji - would be an EXCELLENT password. It is completely random, and connects back to nothing.

How to remember your passwords?

Use a "base group" of random numbers letters "g8xSy2Ji"

Then, for each website make a Subtle Change...

Examples:

For Google: g8xSy2JiG

For Facebook: g8xSy2JiF

For Banking: Bg8xSy2Ji

For Yahoo: Yg8xSy2Ji

In addition... you should Change Your Passwords Every Year! - just like the K12 data Center has us do with our K12 credentials. I know it's a pain, but it's a good practice.

Even if you follow ALL of these suggestions... it's possible that a hacker could cause a data breach of a site and steal your current data. Which is why you should stay active in following the best practices.

I hope this doesn't scare anyone... it is meant to be informative, and hopefully serves as a reminder to stay vigilant in protecting your accounts and data!

I know when it gets to holiday season, people like to watch
The K-12 Data center is migrating the state's e-mail service to Microsoft's servers.

Basically, all this means is that the webmail will have a little different look, and that the email servers will not be physically located at the K12 Data Center in Madison.

Note: The K-12 Data Center will still manage the e-mail system.

The new link to access State Webmail is this: https://outlook.office.com/owa/?realm=k12.sd.us

To log in, use your full e-mail name as your username, such as: mark.harming@k12.sd.us

The "new" e-mail looks something like this.

I recommend saving this link, and putting in your favorites or bookmarks.

If you are an Outlook User... Outlook will probably ask you to restart, and should connect for you.

However, if you have trouble re-connecting with outlook, here are some steps you can follow:

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif;">1)
From the Control Panel, double-click Mail
2) In the Profiles section, click Show Profiles
3) Select any profiles listed and click the Remove button to remove them
4) Click OK

Then, attempt to set up Outlook again either through the wizard or the Control
Panel. coacharminghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407896015412951879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938054770488444541.post-54968146107796272352015-12-14T08:26:00.005-06:002015-12-14T08:26:48.674-06:00Happy Birthday Marcus!Hard to believe my 2nd youngest is a teenager!

I will plan on migrating all our websites (that would include the school site, and the staff sites), next Tuesday, May 26th.

The new servers will no longer support "Front Page Extensions" and will not use Front Page as web development software.

What does this mean for you?
1. You can NOT use Microsoft Front Page 2003 to edit your webpage any more.
2. To edit your webpage, you will need to use either Sharepoint Designer 2007 or Expression Web 4.

Both are a free download from Microsoft

Sharepoint Designer 2007

Expression Web 4

3. Once you install them, you can open your website by following the directions on this FAQ from the K12 Data Center Members Site: FAQ 187 Open Web Site Using Sharepoint Designer 2007
(you will need to know your K12 Credentials to log into the Members site)

Will this affect your webpage?
Not much... there are only a few features that will be affected in the migration.
Those will include: (This is copied from FAQ 1316)

If your website included these FrontPage features, you can expect the following after your site is migrated:

FrontPage counters

These counters will break. They can be replaced with an alternative (e.g. StatCounter).

FrontPage forms

These forms will no longer work. Any form that you would like to continue using will need to be replaced with an ASP.NET form.

FrontPage discussion boards

Users will still be able to view the discussion boards but will be unable to post new content.

FrontPage page includes

Changes to the included page will no longer update across the connected pages. Future edits will need to be made on each individual page.

So... In Conclusion... If you use Microsoft Frontpage for Webpage editing... you will need to install either Sharepoint Designer 2007 or Expression Web 4, for editing your webpage.
Have a good one everybody!coacharminghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407896015412951879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938054770488444541.post-65698469867770570532015-04-16T12:58:00.000-05:002015-04-16T12:58:37.968-05:00Enabling Java in Chrome BrowserOne of the helpful things about Chrome is that it updates automatically. Once you have it installed, it automatically updates and upgrades to the newest version whenever you use it, and shut down for the day.

However. There is a slight problem that has arisen with running Java (which infinite campus, and other websites use) in the "new" version on Chrome, Chrome Version 42. (Which just came out, this week).

What you need to do?
1. If you are using all your websites normally, and nothing is giving you trouble. Do nothing. This means that your chrome hasn't updated yet (and you can't make the appropriate changes until it has gotten past Version 42).

2. If websites with Java platforms included on them stop working (Infinite Campus in SD, or the TestNav Testing Site in MN)...there is a simple solution (3 steps long) to enable this in Chrome Version 42 and later.

This "snip" was taken directly from the Java Website.

(almost)The Smarter Balance Tester 7.2 has been installed in all the desktops in the computer lab, and on the Juniors computers today. The AirSecure Browser for the chromebooks has also been updated.

The Smarter Balance Browser should have a logo and shortcut on the desktop and it looks similar to this.

In addition, the Questar Test Browser (used for the Science portion of the testing, for grades 5, 8, and 11) has also been installed in the Computer Lab, and on the Junior machines. After installation each of those tests was logged into once, and given a trial run, making sure all the features of the test work (highlighter, help page, calculator, etc...). Once the trial test was completed the machines are registered as OK to go. As of the moment I am writing this, all seem to be working!

The Questar logo should be located on the desktop, and will look similar to this.

The chromebooks will have a different log in for the Questar Test. These have been requested from Questar, and they should be getting those to me at any time.

When I get those, the students will log into the chromebooks using the Questar log in when they get on the chromebooks. They will NOT log in to their normal chromebook account. (I will install the Questar accounts on each of the chromebooks)

As before, if they are taking the Smarter Balance portion of the test, they will use the Smarter Balance "AirSecure Browser" which is located on the startup page. This is what is known as a "Kiosk" App, and I have checked the machines, and it is there.

So hopefully, we will have the chromebooks finished up by the end of this week, and we should be all set and ready to go for online standardized testing!

I do have a few old "loaners" to image, to make sure we have some spares for the Juniors.

If you would like the tester installed in your classroom to "practice", all you need to do is ask, and I will get it done for you. It only takes a few minutes to install the Smarter Balance Tester, and a little bit longer for Questar (since it requires a log in, and check of the system to register the machine).

Thank you very much, and Happy Testing!coacharminghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407896015412951879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938054770488444541.post-32561261551214884522014-09-29T14:46:00.003-05:002014-10-24T15:13:37.144-05:00Adding printers (new server)OK.. here is what you will need to do, to add the printers on the new server.

1. Go to Start button and click on "Devices and Printers"

2. You will want to click "add a printer" at the top, and then select "Add a Network printer".

You will then get a list of printers on the network... the two you want to add are:
"Teacher Workroom on ElkFileServ" and "Office on ElkFileServ".

They will be a ways down the list...there will be a number of them listed from "Server1" This is the old server...Do NOT select from Server1.

You should be able to install these printers, and you will be good to go, and hopefully have no further issues with running out of memory.

Please Set "Teacher Workroom on ElkFileServ" as your "default" printer.

The "Office on ElkFileServ" is the color printer, and should only be used on those rare occasions when you have to print something in color.

You May Notice that "Computer Lab on ElkFileServ" has already been added to your printers. This is the North Lab, and I have set that as the default printer for the entire school domain (so the students all have that one installed already).

Once we have everyone transitioned over to the new server Print Service...we will take off all the Server 1 printers...but for now, it's a best practice to have both, until everyone is switched over.

Once you have the new printers installed... you should be able to "remove" the old printers on Server1. (That means the old office and lounge printers... I don't think it'll allow you to delete the original north lab printer (it's the default for everyone), and of course this doesn't apply to other machines like the FACS or Secure printer used in the office.)

This would include the printers I installed as a workaround the "ElkServerDC" printers...both Toshiba and Workroom should be deleted.

I will give this a few day, and then I will disable the Print Service on the old "Server1".

When that happens, any printers that are connecting through Server1...will no longer be reachable. For Example "North Lab on Server1" won't be there, but "Computer Lab on ElkFileServ" will be there. Some of them may still appear in your list of printers...but they would be grayed out.

This MAY, just may, cause a few issues for those people with the AR printers or the FACS room, but we should be able to do a re-install on those, because they are on the new server as well. Your computer just may be pointing to the old server to reach them right now.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR PATIENCE. This has been a difficult process. But we have gotten through it because our staff is so great.coacharminghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407896015412951879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6938054770488444541.post-1622783179296578232014-06-10T14:56:00.000-05:002014-06-10T15:05:55.029-05:00My trip to Blue HeavenMost people who know me, know of my (somewhat irrational) love of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

I had a grade school friend, back in my Rutland Elementary Days, who moved to South Dakota from North Carolina. And I kind of picked up cheering for the Tar Heels from him. Or because of him. Something like that.

I have stuck with them ever since. And although I would cheer for my Jackrabbits if they played them, UNC is my favorite of the "major college" teams.

I was able to visit briefly a few years ago, as my niece Graduated from UNC, and although I got to see some things, it was a rushed and busy weekend (flew in Friday, Left Monday morning...and a graduation and 2 receptions attended).

This time... My wife was signed up to take a class right there in Chapel Hill, so I had a room and everything, just had to purchase airfare and meals. So I decided to ride along, and take in the Campus, and of course the BB program.

Anyway, here are some...Most of the pictures from my trip. Hope you enjoy!
