Tuesday Teacher Tidbits: Websites

Did you know that this Friday is World Teachers' Day?

Inspiring Video below on the use of Google Drive - using forms to connect with students.

I really enjoyed that.

Just a quick note:  Tomorrow, October 3rd I will be working in Lake Benton, and then I will be leaving work at 12:30 pm to attend the Dakota Valley Conference Cross Country Meet held in DeSmet.

Instead of looking at tools and/or giving technology tips today, I thought it might be fun to share some interesting websites that you can possibly utilize in your classroom, or in research, or just in day to day work.

1.  http://www.google.com/edu/

-Google in Education website, just a good "portal" to access all of Google's education resources.
I really like this page - a showcase of student work using Google tools.  Great place to just get some ideas of things you can do.

2.  http://yesiknowthat.com/

-Interesting website with a lot of little know facts in all sorts of subject areas.
Good Example:  Article on Glaciers - could be useful in Science or Geography classes.

3.  http://mashable.com/

-Website dedicated to Social Media news and Web tips.
It's mostly Tech stuff, but there is a ton of information on here, like this article on Fake Apple Discount Cards.

4.  http://lifehacker.com/

-Website that focuses on technology, but also life in general, work, and just getting things done.
Example:  Enjoyed this article on why work stresses us out.

5.  http://tinybuddha.com/

-Just a neat little website with sayings and quotes to "find inner peace".  Great website to go to when you're feeling stressed out, anxious, nervous, etc.  Read a couple quotes, take a couple deep breaths, and go about your day.
Example:  Really liked this quote.  So much so, I printed it and hung it on my door yesterday.
(I actually discovered this website by following "Tiny Buddha" on Google+)
tiny buddha can help you relax.

6.  http://tvfury.wordpress.com/

-This is not really a classroom resource like the other websites, but still one I recommend.  TV Fury is the "pet writing project" of Terry Vandrovec (the Argus Leader SDSU beat writer) and Shawn Fury ( a writer in New York City).
-The neat thing about tvfury is that it's not just about sports, even though both of the writers are basically sports writers.  They cover all sorts of topics from movies, to the "big soda" ban in New York City, to just about everything under the sun.
-Both Shawn and Terry are both accomplished writers, so usually the articles are pretty darn good, and they post something new every single work day.
-The reason I include TVFury on this list, is not as an educational tool, but an example of the power of writing.  How can we include writing and the expression of our ideas in our classes?  TVFury shows that the number of topics, is basically...unlimited.
-Plus they also let the occasional "doofus" do a guest column for them, every once in a while.

Monday the 15th of September

Boy I am tired today.  We moved a couple more trailers of things from our home in Chamberlain yesterday.

I got finished unloading somewhere around 10:30 pm last night, and I still have a trailer to go.

On the bright side... probably 95% of our things are moved now.  And we got to bring our dogs with us.  Dexter and Jagger are very excited to be in Elkton and they are really enjoying running around in the backyard!

I've got another trailer to unload this week, so it is going to be a very busy week at the Harmings!

We will be doing Internet safety talks in the Elementary School Monday and Tuesday this week.  We'll be going over some helpful and useful information in how to stay safe online.

I am also arranging times to meet with the JH students this week as well.

Today is "Super Hero Day" for Homecoming week.  I've heard that a very bright and talented girl thought up the idea for that.  I'm looking forward to seeing all the costumes.  I didn't really have a costume, so I wore my US Army Academy Sweatshirt.  Figured I'd wearing something from a "Real American Hero".

Things have been very busy in the Tech office.  I am continuing to load the software onto the touchscreen computers.  I have grades 6, 5, 4, and Kindergarten finished.  Need to load Grades 1-3 yet.  Also, once I have all the programs installed and the computers in the classroom, We'll be installing the projectors in the classrooms where they are needed.

Also, Karla's desktop computer in the office crashed last week, so I am attempting to recover her information from the hard drive.

Good Luck to all the teams in their activities this Homecoming week!  I plan to leave a bit early on Wednesday to attend the CC meet in Dell Rapids.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Monday, August 13th

Back at work this morning.  Taylor and Cameron came with me this trip, to start Cross Country practice today.

Hopefully Dad can convince them to come and help with getting some of the computers ready.

Continuing to place orders for toner, and other things.

Computer bags for the HS netbooks are in!

I'll be busy imaging some nettop computers this afternoon.  And doing a few other things.

Busy week ahead of me.  Probably a few late nights.

Biorhythms - suffering

A Biorhythm is :  A recurring cycle in the physiology or functioning of an organism, such as the daily cycle of sleeping and waking.

And mine are suffering.

Running back and forth between Chamberlain and Elkton, staying at my parents house without my wife and children, I can't get "into the groove".

Things are going well, but my sleep schedule is off, which throws everything else off.  It's amazing how important a solid nights sleep is.

Looking forward to next week, when Taylor and Cameron get to come with me as they are starting CC practice.

Also looking forward to the Cross Country season.  It is possibly my favorite sport to watch.

Back in Elkton today.

I'm back in Elkton today, and it's already been a busy morning.

I added a few more websites to the Delicious "Stack" that I created for Elkton School.  http://delicious.com/stacks/view/Pw2wtF

Finally got a working login and password for Campus!  Now I just gotta learn how to use all my rights and such.

Looks like a busy day.  I'll be working until noon tomorrow (Friday), and then heading back to Chamberlain.  I'm starting to miss my family.  Looking forward to the start of CC season, and I'll at least have Taylor and Cameron here with me.

Monday - Test Review Day

JH/MS Health Classes will be having a test review day today for chapter Six.

Students will be given a paper study guide to fill out and look up the answers on their own.

Then, they will log in to edmodo to take the practice test.  Students are allowed to take the practice test as many times as they want.  It will not reflect on their grade whatsoever.

Parents:  Want to see what you child is studying in health class?
Take the Practice Test yourself.  Just click on the link.
(Note link will only stay "live" until Wednesday morning.)

Chapter Six test will be taken Wednesday.  On line for most students.

Personal Fitness students will be weighing in and fitness testing again today.
Today's fitness tests will include:
1.  40 yard dash
2.  1 minute pushups
3.  2 minute situps

Congrats to the CHS girls CC team for their 5th place finish at the state meet on Saturday.

Also congrats to the 3 boys runners who participated.  Nice job everyone.

Remember, Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday evening!

No School on Friday.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Friday- Lessons, Weekend, Announcements, Video

Today is the last day of the first quarter.  Monday we will begin the second quarter of the school year.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held next Thursday, October 27th from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

No School on Friday, October 28th.

Lesson Plans for next week are done and posted online.

Good Luck to the Chamberlain Cubs Cross Country Team as they leave today to run at the State CC Meet in Sioux Falls tomorrow.  We are all very proud of you, no matter how the state meet goes, you've already accomplished so much this season.

Run Hard, Run Fast, Run Strong

In other weekend events, my South Dakota State Jackrabbits will be hosting the #3 ranked NDSU Bison in Brookings on Saturday.  The Bison have a very strong team this year, destroying the Big 10 Conference's Minnesota Golden Gophers already this year.  I'm just hoping the Jacks play well, could be a tough game.

Halloween is right around the corner, I should probably change my "slideshow" to Halloween from Autumn, but I think I'll wait until Monday to change it.

For this week's video, I am keeping with the Cross Country theme for another week.

Enjoy Slade's "Run, Runaway".

It's Friday, Friday... with Weekend and Video.

I almost feel bad for Rebecca Black.  Will she ever live that song down?  It's doubtful.
Anyway, it is Friday!  Hope everyone has a good one.

Lesson Plans are not ready, at this moment.  I do plan on writing them today, though.  Check back later.

Good Luck to the Cubs FB team as they travel to Mobridge tonight.

And Congrats to the CHS Cross Country teams!
-Amazing performances yesterday as the girls won another region title (I'm pretty sure that's at least four in a row).  And the Boys finished in third place to qualify as a team.

Some very proud CHS parents were seen walking around the Chamberlain Golf Course last night.
(and yes, I include myself among them.)

Weekend - not much big planned for this weekend. Hopefully I'll get a run or two in, and get caught up in some work around the house.

My SDSU Jackrabbits take on the Northern Iowa Panthers.  Will be a very difficult game for the Jackrabbits as UNI is ranked #2 in the nation.  However the game is played at Coughlin Alumni Stadium, so the Jacks do have that going for them.

San Diego Chargers have a bye week, so I'll get to relax on Sunday.

Today's Friday Video is in honor of the great CC performance yesterday!

Enjoy "A Flock of Seagulls"

And I ran, I ran so far away...

Not a whole lot else to report today.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Weekend in the Harming household.  Jackrabbits won!  Chargers won!  and the Packers won (not my team, but Cameron and Marcus cheer for them).

Monday, October 3rd

Classwork today for JH Health.  We will be finishing the assignment over Chapter 5 Sections 1 and 2 today.

Personal Fitness is weighing in, and Fitness Testing.  Today's test is Maximum Bench Press.

Chargers won yesterday to move to 3-1, so that's the good news.
Jackrabbits fell on Saturday to move to 1-4, so that's the bad news.

A large number of activities going of today:
CHS Boys Golf is at State.
JV Football hosts Winner.
JH Volleyball goes to Platte.
HS Volleyball goes to Crow Creek.

And.. CHS Cross Country goes to Platte to run the SESD Conference Meet.

Run Hard.  Run Fast.  Run Strong.

Go Cubs!!

Friday - Lessons - Weekend- Video

Lesson Plans for next week are done.

For Friday "Fun Day" all kids who have their work made up are playing flag football outside today.

Personal Fitness is going to attempt to play soccer today.

Next Monday... Health classes will have a test over chapter one.
There is an online "practice test" up on the internet, and it is linked from edmodo.  I could post it here, but then anyone in the world could link into it.

This Weekend, my Jackrabbits and their new quarterback Austin Sumner (redshirt Freshman from Brandon Valley) travel to Illinois State.  Could be a tough game.  Good Luck Jacks!

Go Big.  Go Blue.  Go Jacks.

Also, Good Luck to our CHS CC team as they Travel to Platte tomorrow morning.  The team has been running well, and we hope this continues.
Run Hard.  Run Fast. Run Strong.

And lastly, to the Friday Video of the week.  Who else but R.E.M. could be our selection this week?
I tried to pick a song that most people hadn't heard, but still makes you want to "tap your toes".

Enjoy "Supernatural Superserious"

Have a great Weekend Everyone!

Monday, Sept. 19th

Tough weekend for Mr. Harming!  Both the Jackrabbits and the Chargers took it on the chin this past weekend.  Oh well, not much I can do sitting on my couch.  Did get out on the road yesterday for a 4 miler, it was slow, but I got some miles in.

Today, JH Health Classes are working in the classroom.  No laptops today, we'll be talking a bit about section 2, doing a note taking guide on section 3, and then Homework/end of class assignment will be to read Section 4.

Personal Fitness is doing testing today.  40 Yard Dash, and Push-ups.  After the testing, we will do some core work.

Good Luck to the CC team as they travel to Bon Homme today!

Lesson Plans, Weekend, and the Friday Video!

Lesson Plans for next week are done.  Click Here

Congrats to the Chamberlain CC teams yesterday.  Girls Varsity and Boys Junior Varsity each won their divisions.  Superb performances in poor weather conditions.

This weekend my South Dakota State Jackrabbits travel to Cal Poly.
For those unfamiliar with that school, here is the link to their website.
In addition to being an outstanding university, Cal Poly usually fields an excellent football team.

Go Jackrabbits!

I took the week off after the Sioux Falls Half Marathon last weekend, but I do plan to start running again on Sunday.  One race left this calendar year:  The Hobo Day 5K in Brookings.

For the Friday Video, I went with one of my favorite bands of the year:  Mumford and Sons

Hope everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend!

Flag Football and Cross Country

Today, most of the JH classes are playing flag football.

We had to play indoors because of the cold weather this morning, but I did instruct the students to bring their sweatshirts again next week, because we may go outside again.

Personal Fitness are doing workouts in the weight room.

I will be leaving early today to work at the Chamberlain Cross Country Meet.
(I'm the "Official Timer" - which means I stand at the finish and shout all the times of the runners)

Mr. Steckelberg will be subbing for my 7th hour PE class.

Good Luck to all the CHS Cross Country Runners!
Run Hard, Run Fast, Run Strong
Go Cubs!

More Fitness Testing...

Today we will finish up the President's Fitness challenge for most classes.

Most of the student's have finished their mile run.

I will be leaving early today at the end of 6th period, to go to Pierre to watch my children run in the CC meet at Pierre.

Mr. Jeff Steckelberg will be covering my 7th hour PE class.

Reminder, tomorrow is Fun Day/Study Hall Day.  Any student who is missing work/assignments will have study hall.  Students who are all caught up will have a Fun PE Day class.  Mr. Rhodes and Harming's classes will combine.
