Weekend Update for Mr. Harming's Blog

Saying "Weekend Update" makes me think of Seth Meyers.

As the week pulls to a close, I have completed the software installations for the Elementary School Touchscreen computers! (applause)

The electricians were able to get outlets installed for the projectors early this week, and so we will begin installing those...one room at a time.

Homecoming week seemed to be a rousing success to me.  It would have been nice to have won the game, but it was close, and entertaining.

The South Dakota State University Jackrabbits will be hosting the Missouri State Bears this weekend, in The Beef Bowl.  The Jacks played well last week in knocking out a very good Indiana State team.

The San Diego Chargers will travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs this weekend.  Two teams with vastly different approaches this year...the Chiefs kinda stunk the first two weeks, and won last week.  The Chargers won the first two weeks, and stunk last week.  Be a big win for the Lightning Bolts if they pull this one out.

The Harming family will be making a trip out west to Chamberlain this weekend.  It will be our last trip to the "River City" for quite a while.  I hope to get a run in this weekend.  With all the moving and packing and unpacking, and the installation of services, and figuring out all the new stuff... I just haven't been able to run.  I really miss it.

Have a great weekend Everyone!  It's supposed to be beautiful, so get outside and enjoy it!

For your weekend video let's go with a little... R.E.M.

Enjoy "Pretty Persuasion"

Friday the 20th

ICU day today.  Which means people who are missing assignments will stay in the Health classroom to work on them.

Students who have all their work done will go to the gym for a "fun day".

We had a large number of missing assignments this morning, I can tell you that.  Many MS/JH students who are missing multiple assignments.  Hopefully students can get "back in the groove" and get over this, because right now it's kind of ridiculous.

I haven't gotten to my lessons for next week yet, probably will post later today, with the weekend video.

Friday, January 6th

Today in MS/JH PE class we will be having an "ICU Day".  Which means that we will have some sort of fun PE game or activity for all students who are caught up on their work.

Students who are not caught up on their work, or are on "the list" will have study hall and be forced to work on any and all missing work.

High School Personal fitness class will be playing a game today, but it depends on the weather as to what that is.  I'd planned on doing "fitness relays" in the wrestling room, but it is so nice outside lately, that we may scrap that plan and do something to take advantage of the beautiful weather.  It's not often you can have outdoor PE in January.

Congrats to the Lady Cubs for their victory over Crow Creek last night.  The win moves the Lady Cubs to 6-1 on the season.

Good Luck to both the Lady Cubs, and the Cubs Boys Basketball team as they travel to Cheyenne-Eagle Butte for a double header game tomorrow.

Lesson Plans for next week are completed and posted.

This Weekend the South Dakota State Jackrabbits Men and Women's Basketball teams will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on Oral Roberts University.  Oral Roberts was the preseason favorite to win the conference in both divisions.  At this point in the season the Men are tied with SDSU with a perfect 5-0 conference record, and the SDSU women are actually a game ahead of the ORU women.

Go Big.  Go Blue.  Go Jacks.

Also, this weekend marks the Wild card round of the NFL playoffs.  For the second straight year, my San Diego Chargers have missed the playoffs.  So while that is disappointing, it allows me to watch the games and just enjoy them with no real emotional attachments to any teams.  Sometimes, as a fan of a sport I think that is almost better.

Today's music video is from:  The Twilight Singers.  First time I heard this band was last summer, and I was up later than normal and caught their performance on David Letterman.  Excellent Song.
(And no, they have nothing to do with the Twilight movies)

Enjoy.... "On The Corner"

White Wednesday!

Anyone else singing Billy Idol's White Wedding?

OK, last day of school until Thanksgiving break!

Health classes are making their Standards presentations today.

Personal Fitness is doing assignment 10.

And Mr. Harming is wearing all white, in honor of White Wednesday.

Hope everyone has a blessed and safe Thanksgiving weekend!

Monday, November 14th

Health Test today over Chapter 7 - Preventing Violence.

The Practice Test has been online since last Wednesday, I hope some of the students were able to use it.

Personal Fitness is Fitness Testing today.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  I know I did.

SDSU Jackrabbits ended the season with on a 3 game winning streak, and QB Austin Sumner set a Missouri Valley Football Conference freshman record for yardage in a season.  The Jackrabbits struggled a bit this year to a 5-6 record, but considering the schedule they faced, that isn't too terrible, and they gained a TON of experience.  Should be one of the better teams next year.

I've been looking into "barefoot" shoes. Basically shoes that allow your feet to work like they were naturally intended. There is some pretty interesting research into the subject, and it's a big portion of the book "Born to Run".

If anyone has experience in barefoot running, barefoot footwear (excuse the oxymoron), or anything like that, please let me know. I'd love to pick your brain.

Lessons, Weekend, and Video

Lessons for next week are posted HERE.

The weather is supposed to be very nice this weekend, so I hope you can get outside and take in some sunshine before it turns really cold on us.

SDSU Jacks will travel to Western Illinois to close out the season on Saturday.  Hopefully the Jacks will end the season on a 3 game winning streak.

Tonight, the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Michigan State Spartans will start the college basketball season off by playing on an aircraft carrier.  Sounds pretty cool, to me.  I'll be watching.  Go Tar Heels!

For this week's video, let's play something to celebrate our veterans.

Enjoy 3 doors down

Tuesday Nov. 8th

PE day today, all my classes will be in the gym. (except Personal Fitness having workout day in the weight room.)

My son is feeling much better this morning.  Now hopefully my other children don't come down with it.

Have you gotten your flu shot yet?

I got mine a few weeks ago, and my family has all been immunized last week.  In fact, they all got immunized the day I stayed home from school with a sinus infection.

Home with sick child

Mr. Harming is home with a sick child today.

Health Classes are working on note taking guides for sections 3 and 4 of chapter 7.

Personal Fitness will weigh in, and have maximum bench press for fitness testing.

Should be back at work tomorrow!

Friday - Hobo Eve

Lesson Plans for next week are done, please click on the link.

Health Classes this week started Chapter 7, which was on "Preventing Violence".  A very informational and good subject matter for our young people to be exposed to.

This weekend marks the 99th Annual Hobo Day in Brookings, SD.  I will be attending with my family.
We usually make a full day out of it, starting with running in the Bob Bartling Hobo Day 5K run in the morning. Then, we run back to my parentsto change and head back to the Hobo Day Parade.  After the parade, we will have lunch and then attend the game.  This year's opponent is the So. Illinois Salukis.

Hoping for a Victory for the Jackrabbits.

Also this weekend, my favorite NFL squad the San Diego Chargers, take on the favorite team of my Father, and two of my sons, the Green Bay Packers.  I'm not expecting a very good game from my end of things.

I thought I'd double up on videos this week.  In honor of hobo day, let's have a performance from The Pride of the Dakotas marching band, and an SDSU Jackrabbits football highlight video.

Welcome to the Show!!!

Halloween Monday!

Today we are having an assembly during 2nd and 3rd periods, so for Health classes we are going to do a little reading on Kidshealth.org.  We'll be looking at some articles related to "Preventing Violence" which is the next chapter in our textbook, which will start covering on Wednesday.

HS Personal Fitness day today.  We will weigh in, and have fitness testing today.  Maybe Maximum bench press.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween.

I'm going to try to get home early, so I can watch the Chargers and the Chiefs on MNF.

Lesson Plans/Weekend/Video

Lesson Plans for next week.

I hope everyone has an excellent 3 day weekend!

At my house, it's going to be school work (Grad School), watch the Jacks game (on KSFY this weekend) and probably house/yard work.

Monday is Halloween!  I'm not sure what I'm going as, but I know I want to get home in time to catch most of the Chargers/Chiefs game on Monday Night Football!

This week's video is from Foster the People.

I was talking with my 6th period class about them today, most of the class hadn't heard of them, so I thought I'd put them on the blog.

Enjoy the live version of "Pumped Up Kicks" from Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago.

PT Conferences tonight

Parent Teacher Conferences will run tonight from 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Hope to see many of you here.

No School Tomorrow.

I should probably make this my "weekend" post with the video, but I'll save that for this afternoon.

PE - VB Unit

JH PE classes are starting their Volleyball Unit today.

Kids will be working with partners/small groups.

We will probably break into teams on Thursday and give some time to practice all the hits, and then play a game.

Personal Fitness is doing fitness workouts today.

Good Luck to the FB team as they travel to Little Wound for the first round of the playoffs.

Reminder that Conferences will be held on Thursday from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

Reminder there is a test tomorrow in health class over Chapter Six.

The study guide/practice test can be linked to from yesterday's blog post.

JH/MS Health Classes will be having a test review day today for chapter Six.

Students will be given a paper study guide to fill out and look up the answers on their own.

Then, they will log in to edmodo to take the practice test.  Students are allowed to take the practice test as many times as they want.  It will not reflect on their grade whatsoever.

Parents:  Want to see what you child is studying in health class?
Take the Practice Test yourself.  Just click on the link.
(Note link will only stay "live" until Wednesday morning.)

Friday- Lessons, Weekend, Announcements, Video

Today is the last day of the first quarter.  Monday we will begin the second quarter of the school year.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held next Thursday, October 27th from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

No School on Friday, October 28th.

Lesson Plans for next week are done and posted online.

Good Luck to the Chamberlain Cubs Cross Country Team as they leave today to run at the State CC Meet in Sioux Falls tomorrow.  We are all very proud of you, no matter how the state meet goes, you've already accomplished so much this season.

Run Hard, Run Fast, Run Strong

In other weekend events, my South Dakota State Jackrabbits will be hosting the #3 ranked NDSU Bison in Brookings on Saturday.  The Bison have a very strong team this year, destroying the Big 10 Conference's Minnesota Golden Gophers already this year.  I'm just hoping the Jacks play well, could be a tough game.

Halloween is right around the corner, I should probably change my "slideshow" to Halloween from Autumn, but I think I'll wait until Monday to change it.

For this week's video, I am keeping with the Cross Country theme for another week.

Enjoy Slade's "Run, Runaway".

PE Thursday

All of my classes will be PE today.

JH PE students will be learning a new game, called "Single Base Kickball".  I have been unable to figure out a good way for us to record our Heart Rate Monitor data.  I want the students to be able to write down their data after we're done using them.  However, I don't want to use a sheet of paper, too flimsy.  And I'd like something that will last, but not too big or thick.

Anyone have any ideas?  I'd be glad to hear one.

HS Personal Fitness class will be working on their Personal Workout Plans today.  Most of the class had their plans "accepted" yesterday, and so they should be ready to rock.

HS parents, ask your students what their goals were with their plan?  And what exercises they are doing on their workout days?  They should be able to tell you what they are doing, and why they are doing each one.

The weather is starting to get chilly.  I was quite cold riding my bike back home from school yesterday.

Good luck to the Football team tonight as they travel to Wagner.  End of the regular season, wow the school year is going fast.

Speaking of going fast, a quick reminder that first quarter ends tomorrow, October 21st.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be next week on Thursday, Oct. 27th from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

No school next Friday, October 28th.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Classroom Wednesday

I will be in my classroom today, for all of my classes.

MS Health classes will finish discussing the note taking guides over chapter six, and begin work on a "poster" project.

Personal Fitness class will do assignment 6, which is over Nutrition.  It requires the student to do some research at the US Govt's nutrition website, and read a couple articles and report on them.  This keeps the student up to date and informed with current nutritional issues in our society.

Reminder:  End of the first quarter is this Friday, October 21st.

Starting next Monday, we will begin the second quarter, time flies...

Parent Teacher Conferences will be next Thursday, October 27th from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

Lastly, I changed the "slideshow" on the right to pictures of "Autumn" from around the web.

Tuesday, PE Day

Today JH PE students are doing a "fitness workout" during PE classes.

We are wearing Heart Rate Monitors.

Basically, what we are doing, involves doing a different exercise each minute.  For example:  pushups for a minute, then jogging for a minute, then jumping jacks for a minute, etc...  We take a one minute break every 5 minutes or so, and watch our heart rates fall.

The "Zone" we are looking for is 140-180.  Which is right between the "Fat Burning and Aerobic" Zones.  It may even stretch into the Anaerabic zone, which is fine.

Students are improving on using the monitors, and it's fun to watch them actually look at their results at the end of class, and see "hey I spent most of my time in the zone",  or "i didn't work hard enough today".  Very nice to see.

Personal Fitness is having a workout day.  They each wrote their workout plan last week, so they should be using them today.

Should be a nice day outside this afternoon.  This teacher is hoping to get a good run in today.
