Weekend:  We're having a bunch of family over this weekend for Christmas, however on Friday we will be taking coachette to have her tonsils removed in sioux falls.  We should be home Friday afternoon though.  No other real big plans over break, except to possibly run to Brookings to try and catch a Jacks BB game.

No lesson plans this week.  I'll write those when we come back to school in January.

Video:  Enjoy RUN DMC this holiday season.

Monday, December 19th

Last week of school until Christmas Break!

No school on Friday this week.

High School classes have Semester Tests this Wednesday and Thursday.

Today, we'll be finishing up the movie "Supersize Me" with JH Health classes.

Personal Fitness will have their last weigh in, and fitness tests today.  We will have wall sits, and pull ups for today's tests.

Great win by the Chargers last night over the Baltimore Ravens.  This is pretty much an annual event, whenever you count the Chargers out, and think that Head Coach Norv Turner is as good as fired, they turn it on in December and play their best football.  Don't know if it will be enough to make the playoffs this year, and not sure if it will be enough to save Norv's job.  But, it was still fun to watch the team play well after a season of difficulty.

You Go Norv!

Have a great week, everyone.

Late Start Wednesday

2 hour late start today due to slippery road conditions.

Health Classes will continue to watch "Supersize Me" in class today.  Although we won't get to watch alot, with the shortened class periods.

Possible discussion questions with students about the movie:
1.  What new information did you learn about fast food?
2.  Does this information make you less likely to eat it?  Why or why not?
3.  How did the eating of all that fast food make Morgan (the main character) start to feel?

Personal Fitness class has their 3rd Test today.

Congrats to the Lady Cubs for their Big Win last night against Wessington Springs!  Nice Job Ladies!

Happy Birthday to Marcus Harming who turns 9 today.

We Love You Marcus! (from your family).

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

We're still here.

Just to answer the question that every MS student asked the second that it began snowing outside.

We are NOT getting out early.

There is a chance however, that the GBB game in Wessington Springs MAY be postponed.

It's not yet, though.  As of right now, everything is still on!

Tuesday the 13th

PE Day today.

JH students are playing "stealing sticks" games in the gym today.  These games are similar to capture the flag, but played with a few more variables.

HS Personal Fitness students will be having an individual workout day today.  Just a few (2 days) of these left until the end of the semester.

Personal Fitness will have a test, Test 3, Tomorrow.  It will cover assignments 9-12.

Good Luck to the Lady Cubs tonight as they travel to Wessington Springs.

Go Big.  Go Red.  Go Cubs.

Monday, December 12, 2011

Monday, 12-12 Health

Hopefully, Health Classes will be watching the movie "Super-Size Me" today.

That is, if I can get the streaming video to work.  Hulu.com is not cooperating this morning.

Wednesday Health Test Day

Health Classes will be having a test over Chapter 8 today.

I am going to give the students the opportunity to take the practice test, again first.

The link for that practice test is located here.

Once each of the students has taken the practice test... I will put the "Real" Test on-line.

Personal Fitness Class will be working on assignment 12 today... Which is their final assignment for the semester.  Next week, they will have test three, and the following week is finals week.

Assignment 12 is on... Self Improvement.

My Altra Instincts Finally showed up last night, and I got a short two mile run in after school.  Used the Instincts for only a half mile.  They worked well.

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

PE on Tuesday.

Physical Education classes will be in the gym today.  We will be playing a few different varieties of dodge ball.

Nice to see the San Diego Chargers play like they are capable of last night.  It's been a disappointing season, but it was nice to see the team play hard and continue to do their best.  At least they haven't quit on their coach or teammates.

Youth Basketball for 3rd graders starts tonight, I'll be coaching the young boys again this year.  Really looking forward to teaching some more "team concepts" this year.  Give and Go, Pick and Roll, and defensive position.

Personal Fitness are doing fitness workouts in the weight room.

Tonight the Chamberlain Lady Cubs will open their season with a game against Mount Vernon.  As the former coach of the team, I wish them well tonight, and for the entire season.  Good Luck and Best Wishes to Coach Neuharth and all the players!

Go Big.  Go Red.  Go Cubs.

Monday, December 5, 2011

Early Dismissal this Friday

Just a reminder, that this Friday, December 9th there will be an early dismissal.

School will dismiss at 12:30 pm for students.

Teachers will have staff development that afternoon.

Snowy Monday

I have Health Classes today on a snowy Monday at CHS.

Health Classes are going to finish up studying Chapter 8 Today.  We will then take a practice test that is located on the Internet.

The actual test will be Wednesday.  I will leave the practice test up and running until Wednesday morning.  Anyone who would like to attempt the practice test can do so HERE.

Monday Night Football!  Chargers play the Jacksonville Jaguars tonight in a game of two of the more disappointing teams in the league.  I have no hopes or expectations for tonight's game.

Chamberlain Boys Youth BB starts after school tonight.  I will be helping out with 2nd and 3rd grade boys this year.  Which makes for a busy time in our house, particularly in January when the JH Boys are going as well.  We have 4 kids each on their own BB schedule.

Got a decent run in on Friday, however I spent a little too much time "bare footing" it, and my calves were extremely sore over the weekend.  Hoping to get a short run in tomorrow.

Personal Fitness class is weighing in and fitness testing today.

Friday, December 2, 2011

Friday, Dec. 2nd

Well, got to see the elementary school concert last night.

Really enjoyed their version of "the nutcracker".

Lesson Plans for next week are done.

Feeling a bit like a "poser" this morning, because I was unable to get out for a run yesterday.  When I arrived home my in-laws had just arrived as they were attending the Elementary Christmas Concert.  So, I had to stay and visit with them.  So my first run will be today.  I have to remember the working man's running motto:  "sometimes life gets in the way".

Has anyone else out there tried Google Music yet?  Pretty neat.  Google allows you to upload all the music you have on your computer to their "cloud" and you can keep it there forever... for free.  When I started uploading it told me it had room for 12,000 songs, so it's a pretty neat deal.

The idea of cloud computing is really catching on.

Weekend Plans
Well, I'm going for a run tonight, and plan on attending the girls basketball red/white scrimmage.

Nothing major planned for Saturday, probably a run and hang Christmas lights on the house.

Sunday will be family time, and yeah I'll probably try to get a run in.

This week's video is from... Vampire Weekend.

Enjoy A-Punk

PE on a wintery Thursday

Today's PE classes will be playing games in the gym.

The game of the day will be 6 base colony ball.

Personal Fitness has Personal Workout Plan for Thursday.

A little snow on the ground this morning as I came to work.

Elementary Music Concert is tonight at the armory in Chamberlain.  Mrs. Harming and I will be attending to watch our two youngest.

Tomorrow evening will be the Girls BB Red/White scrimmage at the armory.

And, it's December 1st!  My month off from running is over, and I will hit the road for a short 3 miler today.  Possibly outside, possibly on the treadmill.

Wednesday Workday

Today is a classroom day for me.

Health students are Reading Chapter 8 Section 2, on Vitamins, Minerals, and Water, and are then completing a Critical Thinking assignment on edmodo.  Basically, they are answering the 3 critical thinking questions from each of the first two sections of chapter 8.  So that is six questions, to be answered in complete sentences and turned in via edmodo.  24 point assignment.

Personal Fitness students today will be working on Assignment 11 which is over P.E.D.'s.  One of the many worries about the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs is not just that professional athletes are doing them, but that they are setting the example that it is OK to use these.

The best way to battle this is through education.  Students need to be exposed to the harmful effects that PED's can have on their bodies.  Both short term and long term.  A student who is well educated on the issue may still make mistakes or wrong choices, but the chances of them making a good decision are much greater.

Take some time to talk to your student about Performance Enhancing Drugs.  See if they know what they are, what they do, and what their harmful effects are?

Tuesday PE

Today we will use the Heart Rate Monitors (HRM's) to measure how hard we are working in PE.

We will do our standard warmup- Stretching, Pushups, situps, and jog.

Then, we will do some fitness relay races.

Personal Fitness has a workout day today, they will be working on their individual fitness plans.

In personal news, my new "Zero Drop" running shoes from Altra Running are on their way!  I ordered a pair of Altra Instincts.
I'm excited to get started with the "barefoot" running craze.  Altra makes their shoes so that they are designed like the human foot.  You can notice that the padding on the shoe above is the same in the forefoot as it is in the heel.  That is what they call zero drop.

Post Turkey Monday

Welcome back from a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.

Lesson Plans for this week are done.

Health classes today will be starting a new Unit and new Chapter on Food and Nutrition (Chapter 8).

We will be taking a practice "pre-test" to see what the students know before we begin.

Today, we will be looking at section one, which is on Carbohydrates, Fats, and Proteins.  Students will read over the material with a partner and then make an outline to keep for their notes.

Personal Fitness class is going to the weight room, and fitness testing on maximum bench press.  Hope to see some improvements!

Assignment 10 Personal Fitness Fall Semester 2011

Personal Fitness Students,

Read the information in the article below, and then respond to it, in the "comment" section.

REMINDER: Put your name at the bottom of your comment, or I won't know who it is from.

Read the article linked here.

Then, you should comment on which 3 of the eleven tips, you are most likely to follow, and EXPLAIN WHY.

REMINDER: Put your name at the bottom of your comment, or I won't know who it is from.

White Wednesday!

Anyone else singing Billy Idol's White Wedding?

OK, last day of school until Thanksgiving break!

Health classes are making their Standards presentations today.

Personal Fitness is doing assignment 10.

And Mr. Harming is wearing all white, in honor of White Wednesday.

Hope everyone has a blessed and safe Thanksgiving weekend!

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Red Tuesday

Why Red Tuesday?  Because I'm wearing Red today.

Actually the same jacket as in this very photo.

PE today.  1st, 2nd, and 3rd period classes are doing strength training in the weight room.  Not much instruction today, just time for the students to investigate, try things out, ask questions, etc, etc...

Personal Fitness - Workout Day today.  Students will be following their own workout plans in the weight room area.

7th Period - we will be doing our "Health Presentations" today at the start of 7th hour in the gym, because of the shortened class period tomorrow.  Then, with what time is left, we will play a game in the gym.

Reminder:  Tomorrow is the last day of school this week for Thanksgiving break.

School will be dismissed early at 2:30 pm.

Monday, November 21, 2011

Blue Monday

So, since it's Thanksgiving week, and Friday is "Black Friday", I am naming every day this week after a color.

Today I am wearing a Carolina Blue Sweatshirt, so welcome to Blue Monday!

(I bet you are just excited to see what Tuesday and Wednesday are...)

Midterm grades are due to the office by noon Tuesday, so should be mailed on Wednesday?  I am guessing here.  Maybe it will be Monday of next week?  Tough to tell when midterm falls near a Holiday.

Health Classes are working on their Standard Projects today.
Grading Rubric for the project is located here.

Personal Fitness is testing jumprope today.  And we will of course, have a phenomenal abdominals workout.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Friday, November 18, 2011

Friday Fun Day

Can you believe it's the last Friday until Thanksgiving?

No School Thursday or Friday next week for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Reminder:  Today is the Mid Term for the 2nd Quarter.
Midterm reports will be mailed next week.

Lesson Plans for next week are up.

Friday Fun Day! - For Students not on the ICU List we are in the gym playing dodgeball today.

Personal Fitness Game Day will also play dodgeball in the weightroom.

Weekend:  CHS staff are starting off the weekend with a bang!  First Ever Chili Cook-off and Pitch Tournament will be held tonight at the High School.  Good food and good times will be had by all.

My San Diego Chargers travel to Chicago this weekend to play the Chicago Bears.  Not only are the Bears playing much better right now, but they are also my brother's favorite team.  Be nice to win one.

Video of the week:  Since we're supposed to get our first winter storm of the year this weekend, starting around midnight tonight.... How about some November Rain?

Have a great weekend Everyone!

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Thursday, PE day

Today, 7th and 8th grade classes will again be going to the weight room to learn some more information about strength training.

We will be going over the many different uses of dumbells, and how students can use them and incorporate them into their workouts.

The students will have some more free time today in the weight room, to try different exercises and equipment.

Personal Fitness - Workout Day - students will be following their own workout plans today, in the weight room.  Some of the students have been struggling with the "freedom" given to them on their workout days... and they need to realize that these plans are theirs, not mine.  They are graded on PE content standards... but if they are only doing 1 or 2 of their 6 planned exercises.... they are not demonstrating the proper application of the standards to each of their exercises.

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Wednesday, November 16th

It's a brisk, cool, weather day today!

Today I am all about the classroom.

7th and 8th grade students are working in small groups (2 or 3 students) to display the knowledge of a content standard.  What I have done, is put a list of the Standards on the white board, that were on the last test we finished (Chapter 7 Preventing Violence).  However, the students have no idea what they are, they just see the numbers of the standards like... 2.12.3.

Each group then selects a standard number (kind of like making a selection out of a hat, or a random drawing)  I give them the standard and they have to write it down.  Like the previously mentioned 2.12.3 which is "analyze how peers influence healthy and unhealthy behaviors".

They then, as a group, decide how to "Demonstrate their knowledge of the standard".  Some groups are making powerpoint slide shows, some are writing skits, some are doing posters, basically no idea was out of bounds, but they had to get it approved by me first.

The assignments will be due in class next Wednesday.  We will work on them this Monday, as well.  And, the students can choose to work on them Friday during Activity/Fun Day.

Personal Fitness is doing assignment 9, which is on Obesity and Overweight.  It's a good lesson for the students.  They have to create a powerpoint slideshow that shows me what they think are "crucial issues" to know about this subject matter.

Can't believe in a week, we'll be dismissing for Thanksgiving break!  That's awesome.  I love me some Turkey.

Also, we are still collecting e-mail addresses of parents for "contact info" for "the list".  If you have an e-mail address that you use, but the school doesn't know about it... just let me know.  mark.harming@k12.sd.us is my address, and I will be happy to forward it on to the office.

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Tuesday, PE day

Today in Physical Education classes, students are being introduced to strength training.  We aren't doing alot of heavy lifting or anything... just an introduction to what strength training is, who it is good for, what are some of the benefits, and then some demonstrations and practice time on some of the weight lifting machines.

Personal Fitness had a workout day today.  The students did not perform very well today.  They need to be more focused on their workout plans, and less focused on visiting with their friends.

Monday, November 14, 2011

Monday, November 14th

Health Test today over Chapter 7 - Preventing Violence.

The Practice Test has been online since last Wednesday, I hope some of the students were able to use it.

Personal Fitness is Fitness Testing today.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  I know I did.

SDSU Jackrabbits ended the season with on a 3 game winning streak, and QB Austin Sumner set a Missouri Valley Football Conference freshman record for yardage in a season.  The Jackrabbits struggled a bit this year to a 5-6 record, but considering the schedule they faced, that isn't too terrible, and they gained a TON of experience.  Should be one of the better teams next year.

I've been looking into "barefoot" shoes. Basically shoes that allow your feet to work like they were naturally intended. There is some pretty interesting research into the subject, and it's a big portion of the book "Born to Run".

If anyone has experience in barefoot running, barefoot footwear (excuse the oxymoron), or anything like that, please let me know. I'd love to pick your brain.

Lessons, Weekend, and Video

Lessons for next week are posted HERE.

The weather is supposed to be very nice this weekend, so I hope you can get outside and take in some sunshine before it turns really cold on us.

SDSU Jacks will travel to Western Illinois to close out the season on Saturday.  Hopefully the Jacks will end the season on a 3 game winning streak.

Tonight, the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Michigan State Spartans will start the college basketball season off by playing on an aircraft carrier.  Sounds pretty cool, to me.  I'll be watching.  Go Tar Heels!

For this week's video, let's play something to celebrate our veterans.

Enjoy 3 doors down

Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day.  Make sure you go out of your way to thank a Veteran for their service today.  They will appreciate it.

I will complete lesson plans later.

Veterans Day assemby today at the High School at 10 am.

Thursday, November 10, 2011

PE Day, Thursday

JH/MS PE classes will be held in th gym today.  We will be wearing the HRM's and playing different games, seeing how our heart rate is affected while we play.

Personal Fitness is having a workout day.

Chargers play the Raiders tonight, and also the state FB championships start this afternoon in Vermillion.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

Wednesday, Health Day

JH/MS students have Health class today.  We will look over and discuss note taking guides on Chapter 7, and hand out study guides for Chapter 7 Test, which will be on Monday.

A Chapter 7 Practice Test is availible online, all you have to do is click on the link.  Students may take the practice test as many times as they want to help them prepare for the actual test.

Personal Fitness will be having a test today over assignments 5-8.  The test will be linked from edmodo.com.

We are trying to do as many online tests as possible this school year, for a few reasons:
1.  Environmentally friendly - the more tests we take online, the less paper we have to use.
2.  Skill building - as someone who is currently taking some online college courses, on line testing is something that students should have some experience with.
3.  Instant Feedback - the second the student clicks "submit" on an online test, their score is sent to them immediately.  There is no more "waiting" for the teacher to correct the tests (and usually ALL the tests) before handing them back to the students.

What does your student think of taking tests online?
If they had a choice would they prefer online tests or paper tests?
Do they see the value in learning how to take online tests?

Tuesday Nov. 8th

PE day today, all my classes will be in the gym. (except Personal Fitness having workout day in the weight room.)

My son is feeling much better this morning.  Now hopefully my other children don't come down with it.

Have you gotten your flu shot yet?

I got mine a few weeks ago, and my family has all been immunized last week.  In fact, they all got immunized the day I stayed home from school with a sinus infection.

Monday, November 7, 2011

Home with sick child

Mr. Harming is home with a sick child today.

Health Classes are working on note taking guides for sections 3 and 4 of chapter 7.

Personal Fitness will weigh in, and have maximum bench press for fitness testing.

Should be back at work tomorrow!

Friday, November 4, 2011

Friday - Hobo Eve

Lesson Plans for next week are done, please click on the link.

Health Classes this week started Chapter 7, which was on "Preventing Violence".  A very informational and good subject matter for our young people to be exposed to.

This weekend marks the 99th Annual Hobo Day in Brookings, SD.  I will be attending with my family.
We usually make a full day out of it, starting with running in the Bob Bartling Hobo Day 5K run in the morning. Then, we run back to my parentsto change and head back to the Hobo Day Parade.  After the parade, we will have lunch and then attend the game.  This year's opponent is the So. Illinois Salukis.

Hoping for a Victory for the Jackrabbits.

Also this weekend, my favorite NFL squad the San Diego Chargers, take on the favorite team of my Father, and two of my sons, the Green Bay Packers.  I'm not expecting a very good game from my end of things.

I thought I'd double up on videos this week.  In honor of hobo day, let's have a performance from The Pride of the Dakotas marching band, and an SDSU Jackrabbits football highlight video.

Welcome to the Show!!!

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

Classroom Wednesday

Health Students will be working on Note taking guides over Sections 1 and 2 on Chapter 7.

Chapter 7 deals with preventing violence.

HS Personal Fitness class will be working on Dietary Guidelines assignment.

Lots of sick staff at the school this week.  I'm hanging in there, but still not feeling 100%.

Remember, if your student has a fever or isn't feeling well, it's usually better to get them seen by medical personnel and get them the adequate rest, so they can come back quickly, and at full strength.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Tuesday Volleyball

Today the JH/MS students will be playing VB for PE classes.

HS Personal Fitness class is having a workout day.

Hope everyone had a safe and sound Halloween.

Cold and Flu season is upon us.  I've had the sniffles and been feeling run down for about a week now, and Mrs. Harming stayed home with our youngest today.

Monday, October 31, 2011

Halloween Monday!

Today we are having an assembly during 2nd and 3rd periods, so for Health classes we are going to do a little reading on Kidshealth.org.  We'll be looking at some articles related to "Preventing Violence" which is the next chapter in our textbook, which will start covering on Wednesday.

HS Personal Fitness day today.  We will weigh in, and have fitness testing today.  Maybe Maximum bench press.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween.

I'm going to try to get home early, so I can watch the Chargers and the Chiefs on MNF.

Lesson Plans/Weekend/Video

Lesson Plans for next week.

I hope everyone has an excellent 3 day weekend!

At my house, it's going to be school work (Grad School), watch the Jacks game (on KSFY this weekend) and probably house/yard work.

Monday is Halloween!  I'm not sure what I'm going as, but I know I want to get home in time to catch most of the Chargers/Chiefs game on Monday Night Football!

This week's video is from Foster the People.

I was talking with my 6th period class about them today, most of the class hadn't heard of them, so I thought I'd put them on the blog.

Enjoy the live version of "Pumped Up Kicks" from Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago.

PT Conferences tonight

Parent Teacher Conferences will run tonight from 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Hope to see many of you here.

No School Tomorrow.

I should probably make this my "weekend" post with the video, but I'll save that for this afternoon.

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

No School on Friday.

PE - VB Unit

JH PE classes are starting their Volleyball Unit today.

Kids will be working with partners/small groups.

We will probably break into teams on Thursday and give some time to practice all the hits, and then play a game.

Good Luck to the FB team as they travel to Little Wound for the first round of the playoffs.

Reminder that Conferences will be held on Thursday from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

Students will be given a paper study guide to fill out and look up the answers on their own.

Then, they will log in to edmodo to take the practice test.  Students are allowed to take the practice test as many times as they want.  It will not reflect on their grade whatsoever.

Also congrats to the 3 boys runners who participated.  Nice job everyone.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Friday- Lessons, Weekend, Announcements, Video

Today is the last day of the first quarter.  Monday we will begin the second quarter of the school year.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held next Thursday, October 27th from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

No School on Friday, October 28th.

Lesson Plans for next week are done and posted online.

Good Luck to the Chamberlain Cubs Cross Country Team as they leave today to run at the State CC Meet in Sioux Falls tomorrow.  We are all very proud of you, no matter how the state meet goes, you've already accomplished so much this season.

Run Hard, Run Fast, Run Strong

In other weekend events, my South Dakota State Jackrabbits will be hosting the #3 ranked NDSU Bison in Brookings on Saturday.  The Bison have a very strong team this year, destroying the Big 10 Conference's Minnesota Golden Gophers already this year.  I'm just hoping the Jacks play well, could be a tough game.

Halloween is right around the corner, I should probably change my "slideshow" to Halloween from Autumn, but I think I'll wait until Monday to change it.

For this week's video, I am keeping with the Cross Country theme for another week.

Enjoy Slade's "Run, Runaway".

PE Thursday

All of my classes will be PE today.

JH PE students will be learning a new game, called "Single Base Kickball".  I have been unable to figure out a good way for us to record our Heart Rate Monitor data.  I want the students to be able to write down their data after we're done using them.  However, I don't want to use a sheet of paper, too flimsy.  And I'd like something that will last, but not too big or thick.

Anyone have any ideas?  I'd be glad to hear one.

HS Personal Fitness class will be working on their Personal Workout Plans today.  Most of the class had their plans "accepted" yesterday, and so they should be ready to rock.

HS parents, ask your students what their goals were with their plan?  And what exercises they are doing on their workout days?  They should be able to tell you what they are doing, and why they are doing each one.

The weather is starting to get chilly.  I was quite cold riding my bike back home from school yesterday.

Good luck to the Football team tonight as they travel to Wagner.  End of the regular season, wow the school year is going fast.

Speaking of going fast, a quick reminder that first quarter ends tomorrow, October 21st.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be next week on Thursday, Oct. 27th from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

No school next Friday, October 28th.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Classroom Wednesday

I will be in my classroom today, for all of my classes.

MS Health classes will finish discussing the note taking guides over chapter six, and begin work on a "poster" project.

Personal Fitness class will do assignment 6, which is over Nutrition.  It requires the student to do some research at the US Govt's nutrition website, and read a couple articles and report on them.  This keeps the student up to date and informed with current nutritional issues in our society.

Reminder:  End of the first quarter is this Friday, October 21st.

Starting next Monday, we will begin the second quarter, time flies...

Parent Teacher Conferences will be next Thursday, October 27th from 2:30 to 8:30 pm.

Lastly, I changed the "slideshow" on the right to pictures of "Autumn" from around the web.

Tuesday, PE Day

Today JH PE students are doing a "fitness workout" during PE classes.

We are wearing Heart Rate Monitors.

Basically, what we are doing, involves doing a different exercise each minute.  For example:  pushups for a minute, then jogging for a minute, then jumping jacks for a minute, etc...  We take a one minute break every 5 minutes or so, and watch our heart rates fall.

The "Zone" we are looking for is 140-180.  Which is right between the "Fat Burning and Aerobic" Zones.  It may even stretch into the Anaerabic zone, which is fine.

Students are improving on using the monitors, and it's fun to watch them actually look at their results at the end of class, and see "hey I spent most of my time in the zone",  or "i didn't work hard enough today".  Very nice to see.

Personal Fitness is having a workout day.  They each wrote their workout plan last week, so they should be using them today.

Should be a nice day outside this afternoon.  This teacher is hoping to get a good run in today.

Monday Health Day

Welcome back to school from what I hope was a relaxing weekend.

I was able to go fishing this past weekend, something I rarely do.

JH Health Classes will be finishing up their note taking guides from Chapter 6 today.

Personal Fitness class is fitness testing and weighing in today.  Today's test is:  Pull Ups.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Lesson Plans

Next Week's Lesson Plans are done.  Just click on the link.

It's Friday, Friday... with Weekend and Video.

I almost feel bad for Rebecca Black.  Will she ever live that song down?  It's doubtful.
Anyway, it is Friday!  Hope everyone has a good one.

Lesson Plans are not ready, at this moment.  I do plan on writing them today, though.  Check back later.

Good Luck to the Cubs FB team as they travel to Mobridge tonight.

And Congrats to the CHS Cross Country teams!
-Amazing performances yesterday as the girls won another region title (I'm pretty sure that's at least four in a row).  And the Boys finished in third place to qualify as a team.

Some very proud CHS parents were seen walking around the Chamberlain Golf Course last night.
(and yes, I include myself among them.)

Weekend - not much big planned for this weekend. Hopefully I'll get a run or two in, and get caught up in some work around the house.

My SDSU Jackrabbits take on the Northern Iowa Panthers.  Will be a very difficult game for the Jackrabbits as UNI is ranked #2 in the nation.  However the game is played at Coughlin Alumni Stadium, so the Jacks do have that going for them.

San Diego Chargers have a bye week, so I'll get to relax on Sunday.

Today's Friday Video is in honor of the great CC performance yesterday!

Enjoy "A Flock of Seagulls"

And I ran, I ran so far away...

Thursday, CC Region Championship

Good Luck to the Chamberlain CC Team at the Region meet today!

Run Hard.  Run Fast.  Run Strong.

PE day today for Mr. Harming's classes.

I'll be leaving school early today to work at the Region CC meet as the "official timer".

Not a whole lot else to report today.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Wednesday, Wednesday

Classroom Day today at CHS/CMS.

7th and 8th grade students are working on Chapter 6 note taking guides today.

7th period students will take their test first, and then they will get the note taking guides.

HS students will be writing their personal fitness plans.  This is the plan that they are to follow for pretty much the remainder of the semester.  So, it is important that they do a good job.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Tuesday, Tuesday

since it follows "Monday, Monday".

PE day today!  We're looking at finishing up our unit on Ultimate Frisbee.  We may strap on a heart rate monitor or two and see how hard they are working today.

Personal Fitness class has a workout day.  Students will be working out in the weight room and wrestling area.

Parents of Personal Fitness students, ask your child what activities they enjoy doing on workout days?

Personal Fitness will be writing their "Personal Workout Plans" for the rest of the Semester tomorrow.  Basically, they will write a workout plan that they will follow each Tuesday and Thursday.  After the plan is written, they are expected to follow it on workout days.  Or possibly make changes to it.

Speaking of workouts, like Hans and Franz said, "We are here to Pump.... You UP"

Monday, October 10, 2011

Monday, Monday

Hope everyone had a great (wet) weekend!

Good Weekend in the Harming household.  Jackrabbits won!  Chargers won!  and the Packers won (not my team, but Cameron and Marcus cheer for them).

Region CC this week (Thursday) at the Chamberlain Golf Course.  The official timer will be there, and will be ready!

Health Class:  Chapter 5 Test Today!

Good Luck!!!

Assembly today 7th hour for Native American day.

Hope everyone has a great week.

Friday, October 7, 2011

Friday notes and Weekend

Next Week's Lesson Plans are done.

Monday's Health classes will be having a test over Chapter 5, except for 7th hour.
7th hour is having an assembly on Monday.  They will have the test Wednesday, and probably make up Health Day on Friday.

The River City Band Festival is this weekend in Chamberlain.

This year's festival will be featuring The Pride of the Dakotas marching band.
As a SDSU alum, I always enjoy seeing "The Pride" perform, so I think it's pretty cool that they are coming to perform in my town.  If you've never seen them, you are in for a treat.

Speaking of SDSU, the Jackrabbits football team is traveling to Youngstown, Ohio this weekend to take on the Youngstown State Penguins.  Traditionally a football power the Penguins have fallen on bad luck the past few years.  This years team looks to be improved though, and it will be another tough test for the Jacks, who have lost 4 consecutive weeks.

In a move for "reverse mojo", I will not be putting up the SDSU logo this week.  Maybe that will get them back on the winning streak.

This week's video is Peter Gabriel's "The Book of Love".
I'm choosing the "Scrubs" version, because first of all I love that show, and second of all because it's just so darn touching.  If that video doesn't make you mist up a bit, either you never watched Scrubs, or you're slightly dead inside. (I kid.)

Besides, I think Peter Gabriel could sing the phone book and I'd probably listen to it.

Have a great weekend everyone.

First Injury Today

Today we had our first "real" injury during PE class this school year.

Playing Ultimate Frisbee indoors, and student was chasing down the frisbee and ran right into the cement wall.  Hit his noggin pretty good too.

We have been very fortunate to not need anything other than a few band-aids for some scrapes so far this school year.

This is just a reminder that we try to play as safe as we can.  We would like to avoid injuries if at all possible.  However, when you start doing physical activities that is one of the risks.

I've been very fortunate in my PE teaching career.  No real terrible injuries that I can recall.  Probably the worst were a girl who tore some ligaments in her ankle, and a few broken teeth.  Hopefully this is because I do try to keep the kids safe, but whenever someone does get hurt, it's always a good time to remind people to be safe.

Thursday, Oct. 6th PE

2nd Day of Ultimate Frisbee

We will be playing the "indoors" version today, as the wind is going crazy outside!

First day of "Saturday School" is this Saturday.

JH students will have a Health Test on Monday, remind them to check over those study guides!

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Wednesday, Oct. 5th - Classroom Day

Today JH Students will be finishing Chapter 5.  Partner reading and class discussion over Section 3.

Then students will be given a study guide for the Chapter 5 test.  At the end of the class period students will be allowed to compare answers on their study guide with a partner.

Test will be Monday.

Personal Fitness is having their first test today!  Test is linked off the Edmodo page (for the Multiple Choice portion) and will have an essay element that they will have to answer on Edmodo.

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Tuesday, October 4th

JH PE classes will begin playing Ultimate Frisbee today.  We will briefly go over the rules of the game, and goals of the game.

Personal Fitness class is having a workout day in the weight room.  The students are hopefully applying some of the ideas they have learned in the last two assignments:  strength training and cardiovascular endurance.

Supposed to be a beautiful day today, get outside and get yourself some sunshine, before it's gone!

Monday, October 3, 2011

Monday, October 3rd

Classwork today for JH Health.  We will be finishing the assignment over Chapter 5 Sections 1 and 2 today.

Personal Fitness is weighing in, and Fitness Testing.  Today's test is Maximum Bench Press.

Chargers won yesterday to move to 3-1, so that's the good news.
Jackrabbits fell on Saturday to move to 1-4, so that's the bad news.

A large number of activities going of today:
CHS Boys Golf is at State.
JV Football hosts Winner.
JH Volleyball goes to Platte.
HS Volleyball goes to Crow Creek.

And.. CHS Cross Country goes to Platte to run the SESD Conference Meet.

Run Hard.  Run Fast.  Run Strong.

Go Cubs!!

Homecoming Friday!

Hope everyone has a great homecoming weekend!

Good Luck to the Cubs tonight as they battle the Platte/Geddes/etc.../etc... team.

Early dismissal today for the parade.

Lesson Plans for next week are done.

Not alot on my plate this weekend.  The SDSU Jackrabbits return home after a 3 week trip of doom that saw them lose 3 times, have their starting quarterback quit the team, and several players get injured.  I hope they can pick it up versus a very talented Indiana State team.

Little Known Fact:  Indiana State is the alma mater of one Larry Bird
Yes, that Larry Bird was a Sycamore.

Question:  Why would you name your school mascot after a tree?
Makes no sense to me.

Go Big. Go Blue. Go Jacks.

For the Friday video of the week, I thought I'd go with something new, something catchy, something that will have you singing it an hour later.

Enjoy:   Young The Giant.

HRM's Day 2

Today, PE classes will be strapping on the HRM's and we'll do some sort of running, exercise, and workout time.

For today, we are going to use a "generic" zone for "Fat Burning", and we'll set a low of 140 and high of 160.

That will be our target zone for today.

Next time we use the HRM's we will have "logs" and each student will set their own individual zones that they set earlier in the year.

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

More HRM information

In case anyone was interested in Heart Rate Monitors, and what the training zones actually are...

Here is a good website.

It explains how you can calculate your max heart rate, what each of the zones are, and how you calculate them.  It's actually quite interesting.

Classroom Day and HRM reactions

Today is classroom day for me, and I spend all day in the classroom.

JH Students are starting Chapter 5 today.  They have a reading assignment, and then some key terms and review questions to do.  The assignment is posted on their edmodo classroom.

Personal Fitness will be doing assignment 4 today, which is on Cardiovascular Endurance.  Students will watch a short film on the subject and then do an assignment.  The second portion of today's assignment for the Personal Fitness students will be to figure out their proper heart rate zones.

Heart Rate Monitors went pretty well yesterday.  Although we had a few students who had trouble getting the monitor to work, well over 90% of the students were able to get it pretty quickly.

Each student did the following:
  • Put on the heart rate monitor equipment
  • Got their heart rate to be read by the equipment
  • Set a "target zone" for the day.
  • Did a short "fitness activity" to raise their heart rates
  • Looked at the results of their activity on their monitors.
We will be breaking them out again tomorrow, for PE classes, and it will be up to the students to put them on correctly, and set their target heart zone without instruction.  (of course I will help them out, if they need help)

Overall, I thought the kids really responded well to the HRM's.  It seems like they were willing to work hard when they were getting immediate feedback.  Like I said tomorrow, we will use them again, but it will be most likely another "practice day" where they are getting used to them.  Then in a few weeks, we will not only use them, but record our scores on a "Log" at the end of class.

Website suggestions: being taken

Well, I think it's time for me to update my school webpage.

Mr. Harming's state webpage

It's not that I don't like the one that I have, but it's just time for some "restructuring".

Have any ideas of content that could be added?
Any features or things I could use to "spruce up" the place?

Let me know with an e-mail to:  mark.harming@k12.sd.us

or feel free to comment below.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Good Luck Cubs!

Good Luck to Volleyball, Cross Country, and MS Football in the contests today!

Go Cubs!

Heart Rate Monitors

Today, all my PE classes are learning how to use the Heart Rate Monitors.

The most difficult thing is actually learning how to properly hook up the strap for the transmitter, and then learning how to set your Target Heart Zone on the watches.

The kids are doing ok, though.  It will get easier as the year goes on.

Today, the focus is just on getting them put on correctly, getting them set up, and then reading our results.  We aren't recording our results, yet.  We will however, start to do so once we have a solid grasp of how to run the HRM's.

Things that will be recorded:
Time Spent in Target Heart Zone, Time Spent Above Target Zone, Time Spent Below Target Zone
Max Heart Rate
Average Heart Rate

Today, we didn't have alot of time to "exercise" to really push ourselves.  But we do 5-10 minutes of running/walking just to elevate our heart rates, so we can see the results.

Monday- Test Day!

JH Health Classes have a test today.

The "practice test" was left online all weekend, until this morning.

Personal Fitness will do fitness testing today.

Today also marks the start of Homecoming week.
MS students are dressing up as Cowboys/Cowgirls today.

Tomorrow we are going to try to learn how to use the Heart Rate Monitors.

Friday - Lessons - Weekend- Video

Lesson Plans for next week are done.

For Friday "Fun Day" all kids who have their work made up are playing flag football outside today.

Personal Fitness is going to attempt to play soccer today.

Next Monday... Health classes will have a test over chapter one.
There is an online "practice test" up on the internet, and it is linked from edmodo.  I could post it here, but then anyone in the world could link into it.

This Weekend, my Jackrabbits and their new quarterback Austin Sumner (redshirt Freshman from Brandon Valley) travel to Illinois State.  Could be a tough game.  Good Luck Jacks!

Go Big.  Go Blue.  Go Jacks.

Also, Good Luck to our CHS CC team as they Travel to Platte tomorrow morning.  The team has been running well, and we hope this continues.
Run Hard.  Run Fast. Run Strong.

And lastly, to the Friday Video of the week.  Who else but R.E.M. could be our selection this week?
I tried to pick a song that most people hadn't heard, but still makes you want to "tap your toes".

Enjoy "Supernatural Superserious"

Have a great Weekend Everyone!

PE today and a sad farewell.

JH PE classes are playing flag football today.
Personal Fitness is having a workout day.

And, to the news of the day...

Just heard on the radio that the band R.E.M. has split up.

My favorite band of pretty much all time has called it quits.

I'm not sure what to think of this, or how to react.  It's not too surprising as their last two albums "Collapse into Now" and "Accelerate" were both very good, but were hardly noticed by the general public.  Which is sad, but I guess inevitable.  To be honest, they have never quite been the same since drummer Bill Berry had to quit the band because of health issues (he had a brain aneurism during one of their tours).

A quick browse of the google news found a couple of good articles.
Time Magazine wrote a really nice piece, and I also enjoyed this view from Pop Matters.

I hope people don't mind if I once in a while stray into the music world on my blog.  To be honest, music seems to be the one thing you can bring up that everyone enjoys.  Some may like Country, some may like Rap, but everyone has a favorite.  Everyone likes to sing along, and everyone wants to "tap their toes".

For me, that favorite something was:  R. E. M.

- Enjoy "Find the River"

Wednesday Classroom Day

JH PE students will be discussing Section 4 of Chapter One, "Being a Wise Health Consumer".

Then they will be doing the "practice test" for Chapter One on-line.  It will be linked from the edmodo page.  Students will be allowed to take the practice test as many times as they want.

JH Health test over Chapter One will be on Monday.

Personal Fitness is also having a classroom day today, they will work on assignment 3, which is on Muscular Strength.  We will be looking to apply this knowledge into our own "workout plans" for the rest of the semester.

Today is Midterm for the first quarter already.  The team does seem to go fast.

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Flag football outside today

JH PE kids are braving the wind and playing flag football outside today.

1st hour played 5 on 6 on a smaller field.
2nd hour played on a full size field, but with huge teams 12 vs 11.  Made for an interesting game.  We may "change it up" for Thursday, not sure having two giant teams is the best.

3rd hour will also play on a smaller field.
7th hour - has a few shuttle runs to finish, so we will probably stay indoors today.

Personal Fitness will have a workout day in the weight room.

Lastly, a sad day for me today.  Thomas O'Brien the starting Junior Quarterback of my beloved Jackrabbits has supposedly quit the team.  The team has struggled it's last few games, and he has taken a great deal of the heat for it.

I can not imagine having the talent, drive, determination to become a Division I athlete.  And I also cannot fathom how miserable a person would have to be to walk away from something that I'm certain was a lifelong dream.

As a fan of the Jackrabbits it makes me sad to see a player give up his dreams.

As a coach/teacher it is a shocking revelation as to how much pressure is put on our young athletes.

As a parent, it just makes we want to go home, hug my kids, and tell them how much I love them and how proud I am of them, no matter what.

Excellent Series on Sports Psychology

The Argus Leader is running a really nice series on Sports Psychology this week.

Written by SDSU beat writer Terry Vandrovec.

Here's a link to yesterday's article.

Monday, Sept. 19th

Tough weekend for Mr. Harming!  Both the Jackrabbits and the Chargers took it on the chin this past weekend.  Oh well, not much I can do sitting on my couch.  Did get out on the road yesterday for a 4 miler, it was slow, but I got some miles in.

Today, JH Health Classes are working in the classroom.  No laptops today, we'll be talking a bit about section 2, doing a note taking guide on section 3, and then Homework/end of class assignment will be to read Section 4.

Personal Fitness is doing testing today.  40 Yard Dash, and Push-ups.  After the testing, we will do some core work.

Good Luck to the CC team as they travel to Bon Homme today!

Lesson Plans, Weekend, and the Friday Video!

Lesson Plans for next week are done.  Click Here

Congrats to the Chamberlain CC teams yesterday.  Girls Varsity and Boys Junior Varsity each won their divisions.  Superb performances in poor weather conditions.

This weekend my South Dakota State Jackrabbits travel to Cal Poly.
For those unfamiliar with that school, here is the link to their website.
In addition to being an outstanding university, Cal Poly usually fields an excellent football team.

Go Jackrabbits!

I took the week off after the Sioux Falls Half Marathon last weekend, but I do plan to start running again on Sunday.  One race left this calendar year:  The Hobo Day 5K in Brookings.

For the Friday Video, I went with one of my favorite bands of the year:  Mumford and Sons

Hope everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend!

Flag Football and Cross Country

Today, most of the JH classes are playing flag football.

We had to play indoors because of the cold weather this morning, but I did instruct the students to bring their sweatshirts again next week, because we may go outside again.

Personal Fitness are doing workouts in the weight room.

I will be leaving early today to work at the Chamberlain Cross Country Meet.
(I'm the "Official Timer" - which means I stand at the finish and shout all the times of the runners)

Mr. Steckelberg will be subbing for my 7th hour PE class.

Good Luck to all the CHS Cross Country Runners!
Run Hard, Run Fast, Run Strong
Go Cubs!

Today's Music...

While working on the comuters today, the students this morning asked for some Music because it was "too quiet" in here.

So I played some of the Rolling Stones "Hot Rocks" CD for them.

A little Music education isn't hurting anyone.

Sept. 14th - Classroom

Today students are doing an assignment in the classroom using Edmodo.  They are to turn in their assignment, and then read Chapter One Section Two in their textbook.

Personal Fitness Students are doing assignment two today.  Hopefully Edmodo is working, last week it died on us, and we had to turn in our assignment via e-mail.

The "List" for both MS and HS are now up and running.  I will be working hard to make sure students put on there and taken off in a timely manner.

Weather got cooler outside today.  PE tomorrow, we would still like to go outside.  However, if it's too cold, we can have it indoors.

Hope everyone has a great day.  First night of CCD classes.

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Tuesday, Sept. 13th

PE Day - outside today.

Beautiful weather.

Today we are catching up the last few people who need to finish the mile run, and then beginning our unit on Flag Football.

We didn't get much of an opportunity to play, but we learned how to wear the belts correctly.  We also discussed the rules of the game, and looked at ways you can line up.

Personal Fitness had a workout day in the weight room.

"The List" is up and running.  I'm not sure how well all the staff have gotten to implement it yet, but it looks like we are on the right path.  I've gotten all my students identified by the class period that I teach them.  Now, we have to start updating all work and missing work.

Reminder to parents that if you want a "parent code" for edmodo, to let me know, and I will get you one.

Thanks.

Monday! Sept. 12th

Great win by my San Diego Chargers yesterday, defeating the Minnesota Vikings.
If they'd have lost that one, I'd have never heard the end of it.

Sioux Falls Half Marathon went pretty well.  I've run much faster before, but it certainly could have been worse.  Click on the link if you want to look anyone up.

Here are my results:
Bib No: 1394
Pace: 8:42
Age: 41
Sex/Category: M
Division Place: 23 out of 66

Overall Place: 310 out of 1147

Congrats to the 7th grade girls for winning their VB tournament this weekend.

I beat Mr. Harming Club is uploaded to the internet, just click the link.
However, there may be an addition or two, as we have a few who need to take it yet.

Classroom work today, JH Health Classes are going to start doing some textbook work.

HS Personal Fitness is weighing in, and testing pull ups and situps today.

Hope everyone has a great start to their week!

More Fitness Testing...

Today we will finish up the President's Fitness challenge for most classes.

Most of the student's have finished their mile run.

I will be leaving early today at the end of 6th period, to go to Pierre to watch my children run in the CC meet at Pierre.

Mr. Jeff Steckelberg will be covering my 7th hour PE class.

Reminder, tomorrow is Fun Day/Study Hall Day.  Any student who is missing work/assignments will have study hall.  Students who are all caught up will have a Fun PE Day class.  Mr. Rhodes and Harming's classes will combine.

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Mr. Harming's Mile time

Worst timed mile I've run, in I don't know how long.

7:00

Even though I ran much faster in May, and just a month ago I do two back to back BOTH faster than that, I will let it stand.

Any JH student who beats that time, gets an "I beat Mr. Harming" Certificate.

Classroom Day!

7th and 8th Health Students are learning about Heart Rates and Heart Rate Zones.
-They will be using a mathematical formula to figure out their own levels.
Once they complete the Heart Rate Zone work, they has a short discussion assignment on Edmodo.

PE Standards Based Grading

We are moving towards Standards Based grading in Physical Education this year.

In the past, we graded on a daily participation grade, and then we applied the standards to the units as we were doing them.

Each day in PE class we will be looking for one of the five PE standards.
Standard 1 - which is based in Movement Skills
Standard 2 - which is based in Enhancing Skills and Performance
Standard 3 - which is based in using physical activity to enhance fitness.
Standard 4 - which is based in responsible behavior in a PE setting.
Standard 5 - which is based on opportunities provided by physical activity.

We will be using specific Indicators under each of the five general Content Standards to evaluate.

Grading for each day will be as follows:

A - Advanced - 100%
B - Proficient - 92%
C - Basic - 85%
D - Below Basic - 78 %
F - Failing - 72%
